'People Pretending not to see it' series reflections

I used old photographs from home of the streets of Hong Kong in the 1800s (where I have a family history) and wanted to collage on top of these. I began to sew string in lines according to the visual energy of the image and I really liked the idea of adding to images from the 1800s and making my additions part of the scene. As I was adding the string, I was considering the things that remain common to mankind throughout time. One thing which seemed like it would transcend time was the way that so many things go unsaid and unaddressed in day-to-day life, the elephants in a room which I think must have existed in the 1800s. This led me to title the series 'people pretending not to see it' - as the people in the images were not taking any notice of the bright orange string which I had added.
